Press Release

Hermosa Beach Centennial Children’s Mural approved

The Hermosa Beach Centennial Committee is proud to announce that artists PJ Pauley and Greg Leibert have designed a Centennial Children’s Mural that will be displayed at the Hermosa Beach Community Center during the Centennial year. Children that participate in the Community Resource Programs managed by Hermosa Beach Parks and Recreation department will have the opportunity to help paint the mural under the direct supervision of the artists.

The first brush strokes will begin on Friday, August 4th at the Community Center.

The mural will be approximately 5 feet high and 50 feet long. The mural highlights images of children actively enjoying a variety of beach sports. Please see attached for final rendition.

About the Artists: The muralists have been longtime local residents and were responsible for the successful completion of the Tyco Mural for the City.  Mr. Pauly, the lead muralist, can be contacted at 376-0134.

About the Mural: “Centennial Mural” Project, a 5 foot high by 50 foot long, segmented mural to be installed on wood framing in the grass area located at the South-West corner of Pier & PCH on Community Center Property. . There will be 5 - 10 foot sections, made from plasticized canvas, grommet and painted in a classroom located within the old South School building. When the mural is completed, the sections will be affixed to the 4X4 posts and 2X4 framing with washers and lag bolts. Appropriate flaps will be cut into the mural sections to reduce wind resistance and eliminate the potential for structural failure.  At the end of the centennial celebration the mural will be taken down and be re-installed within a classroom or hallway location in the Community Center.

This event is sponsored by the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis and the Hermosa Beach Arts Foundation who donated supplies and volunteers for this event.

Hermosa Beach - About Town

Show of hands

Hermosans are invited to leave their painted handprints on the walls outside the municipal skate park to mark the city’s 100th birthday next year.

For $5 per kid and $10 per adult, people can come to the park 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, dip their hands in paint, leave an imprint on the walls and sign their names. Plans call for the handprints to remain up throughout 2007, gracing the walls along Ardmore Avenue and Pier Avenue. Proceeds will benefit Centennial events throughout next year.

The event is sponsored by Hermosa Beach Kiwanis and the Hermosa Arts Foundation. Also on hand will be Hermosa Beach Neighborhood Watch and the HBPD, offering fingerprint identification for kids.

For more information call 318-0280, listen to the phone company recording, then hang up and dial 1-310-318-0280.
